My name is Eric
Penney. I have been a student at Allied Gardens School of
Martial Arts for one year now. When I came to AGSMA, I was
looking for a way to help me find a certain balance within
myself. As with most people, my work hours can be rather long
and stressful. The battle to find the right release was a
difficult one. I was at a point in my life where I wanted
to do something better for myself. The traditional way of
working out with weights, didn`t really work for me. I had
previous Martial Arts in Tae Kwon Do, however, I was looking
for something a little different. I thought that Kung Fu would
be a good approach to help strengthen my body inside and out.
When I started
in the Kung Fu program I knew that this was the outlet I was
looking for. From the deep breathing techniques to the concentration
it takes for the body conditioning lessons, to the general
forms that use a more fluid movement. I had never really been
introduced to the art of Tai Chi Chung before. I guess I was
under the misconception that it was for the older Martial
Artists to use to stay in shape. This part of my training
seemed to be where I would focus the most of my attention.
I soon found out it was the most beneficial to my inner strength
building. The knowledge that I gained by concentrating on
putting my breathing and body movements together was overwhelming.
Something as simple as breathing and how you do it makes a
significant difference.
I enjoy how the
lesson curriculum is set up. Each lesson is an opportunity
to learn something new, or be able to fine-tune what you have
already learned before. The results that you get out of Martial
Arts are different for each individual. I have gained so much
in the short time that I have been here. In the year that
I have attended classes, I have regained a lot of the flexibility
in my legs that I once had, and have been able to strengthen
my inner spirit and mind as well. I currently am a 2nd section
student working towards my 3rd section belt. I feel that this
program has not only helped me learn new Martial Arts skills
but also has helped me improve my personal life too.
